Are we a Christian nation?

About 6 months ago, I found a 10 DVD series at my public library called “America‘s Christian Heritage”. I watched the entire 10 DVD series and thought that it was rather amazing. While there were a couple of things that didn’t sit right with me, I told myself that I wasn’t very good in American History, and David Barton obviously knows more than me, so I’ll just move on.

Recently on a fellow blogger‘s blog, I received some pretty unchristian replies to my stand on certain historical things. In between the mocking and the jeering, they told me David Barton was a liar. So, I looked into it. I spent over 8 hours reading my Bible, and looking up info on the “Christian Nation” movement.

The Christian Nation Heresy is based upon the idea that America is established upon the principles of the Bible, therefore America was a Christian nation, therefore had God‘s special blessing on it.

The 1 main problem:

1) Israel was God‘s chosen nation. For the Christian, our citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20) Christians themselves are a Holy Nation (1 peter 2:9), Christians are to set their mind on things above, not below (Colossians 3:2),  Satan rules this sin-infested world (John 12:31,  John 14:30, John 16:11),  and Satan has been given authority over all kingdoms, including America (Luke 4:5-6). I believe we’ve been blessed by the Christians within the nation who’ve been praying and following the Lord. However, that is no longer true. More people have been killed by abortion than by Nazi Germany and Mao combined. (I was going to add Pol Pot in there too as well as Rwanda, but I’d be overshooting it a bit.) And this “Christian” nation has allowed it.

Some add that freedom of religion is a problem also. I don’t agree. Ancient Israel had freedom of religion too, and I definitely don’t want a theocracy.

I know (and have known the whole time) that it’s impossible to be a Christian nation. While I still truly believe that people like Benjamin Rush had honestly good intentions in mind, and they themselves were devout Christians, and may have put their own ideals into the Constitution, they left us enough rope to hang ourselves with.

Plus, the “Christian Nation” heresy is based on “Dominionism”. Dominionism  is a doctrine which demands the total remaking of society to conform with the laws of the Old Testament of the Bible, and it states that the second coming of Jesus Christ will never occur until “God’s kingdom” is established on earth and reigns for either a thousand years or an unknown time period. They contend that all of the laws of the Old Testament  are still valid and they want to literally replace the U.S. Constitution and legal system with the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic laws of the Bible.

I don’t want this!  Do you? While I never bought that whole shpiel, I did however believe that some of Mr. Barton’s history was correct and that he was misinterpreting it.  So I took the vast American history lessons (which for me was now exciting) and just accepted it with nary another thought.

After my research today, I’ve realized that America has produced a bunch of idol worshipers. Like I’ve said in previous posts, we are no better than the Germans during WW2. They were worshiping their government. American’s TRUST that their government will save them. They will die for the government in war and they will defend it as if it’s a clay god.

Don’t get me wrong. Socialism may be even worse.  Socialism almost causes everybody to rely on the government for handouts instead of God But then again, the Bible told us to help the poor. So WE Christians should do it, not the government. Is Socialism the great evil? I don’t know, but it’s definitely not the panacea of the people.

Am I hoping our politicians can balance the budget this coming Wednesday? I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t care. But I know that my trust is in Christ alone. If we became a fascist dictatorship tomorrow at 10 AM, I would have to thank God that he knows what he is doing,  and that he is allowing it for a particular reason.

At least THEN we’ll know who the real believers are.
